An automatic sliding door is the first thing a visitor touches — or rather, does not touch. It shapes the first impression of a hospital, mall or office, controls energy loss at the entrance, and in healthcare settings, contributes directly to hygiene. But entrances vary enormously, and a door specified for a quiet office lobby will fail quickly at a busy hospital emergency entrance. Here is how to specify correctly.
An overhead operator drives one or more sliding leaves along a track. Activation comes from motion sensors, presence sensors, push plates or access control. Safety sensors monitor the door path and reverse or hold the door if someone is detected. The system is designed to fail safe — in an emergency or power failure, escape routes must remain passable.
| Application | Key Requirement | Specification Focus |
|---|---|---|
| Hospital entrance | Very high duty, hygiene | Heavy-duty operator, wide opening for stretchers |
| Operating theatre | Airtight, hands-free | Hermetic sealing, hands-free activation |
| Shopping mall | High traffic, aesthetics | Large glass panels, air curtain integration |
| Office lobby | Moderate traffic, access control | Card reader integration, after-hours locking |
| Airport / station | Continuous duty | Redundancy, breakout for emergency egress |
A hospital entrance may cycle thousands of times per day. Specify an operator rated for continuous heavy duty — a light-duty unit will burn out and become a repeat maintenance cost.
Healthcare entrances must accommodate stretchers and beds with attendants on either side. Retail entrances must handle two-way peak flow without bottlenecking. Measure for the worst case, not the average.
Activation sensors detect approach and open the door. Safety sensors detect a person in the door path and prevent closing. These are different devices with different jobs; a door with only activation sensors is not safe.
Where the door is on an escape route, it must allow escape during power failure — typically through a breakout function where the leaves swing open under manual pressure, or by failing open automatically. Coordinate this with your fire consultant.
An automatic door that stands open lets conditioned air pour out. Correct hold-open timing, appropriate sensor coverage, and an air curtain over the entrance all reduce loss. A lobby or vestibule arrangement — two sets of doors forming an airlock — is the most effective solution for large entrances.
Hospitals need doors that support infection control: hands-free activation everywhere, smooth cleanable surfaces, and hermetically sealing doors for theatres and isolation rooms. Noise matters too — a door near patient areas should operate quietly. For sterile zones, the requirements overlap with those in our clean room doors guide.
Automatic doors are safety devices and need scheduled servicing: sensor testing and alignment, track cleaning, roller and belt inspection, operator and control checks, and verification of the emergency breakout or fail-safe function. Document every service — in healthcare and public buildings, this record matters.
Usually a misaligned or oversensitive motion sensor picking up movement outside the intended zone — passing traffic, moving foliage, or even rain. Sensor field adjustment resolves it and stops the energy waste.
Yes — electric locks integrated with the operator, controlled by a mode switch or an access control system, allow the door to be secured while still permitting authorised entry and emergency egress.
Depending on configuration: the door may fail open, may be openable by hand, or may break out under pressure. On escape routes, safe egress must be guaranteed — confirm this behaviour at specification stage, not after installation.
Rudhar Group has been manufacturing industrial doors, rolling shutters, gates and loading bay equipment since 1998, from our facility in Delhi NCR.
Clean room doors are built for controlled, dust-free environments in pharma, food and electronics facilities.
We supply and install across Delhi NCR, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. Every unit is manufactured to the opening size supplied by the customer — share your site dimensions and location for a quotation.
The entrance is infrastructure, not decoration. Specify the operator for real duty, size the opening for the largest user, install both activation and safety sensors, and plan emergency egress from day one. Contact Rudhar Group for automatic sliding doors, hermetic hospital doors and complete entrance automation across Delhi NCR and India.
