How Automatic Sliding Doors Work

An overhead operator drives one or more sliding leaves along a track. Activation comes from motion sensors, presence sensors, push plates or access control. Safety sensors monitor the door path and reverse or hold the door if someone is detected. The system is designed to fail safe — in an emergency or power failure, escape routes must remain passable.

A hospital entrance may cycle thousands of times per day. Specify an operator rated for continuous heavy duty — a light-duty unit will burn out and become a repeat maintenance cost.

2. Clear Opening Width

Healthcare entrances must accommodate stretchers and beds with attendants on either side. Retail entrances must handle two-way peak flow without bottlenecking. Measure for the worst case, not the average.

3. Sensors — Two Types, Both Needed

Activation sensors detect approach and open the door. Safety sensors detect a person in the door path and prevent closing. These are different devices with different jobs; a door with only activation sensors is not safe.

4. Emergency Egress

Where the door is on an escape route, it must allow escape during power failure — typically through a breakout function where the leaves swing open under manual pressure, or by failing open automatically. Coordinate this with your fire consultant.

5. Energy Efficiency

An automatic door that stands open lets conditioned air pour out. Correct hold-open timing, appropriate sensor coverage, and an air curtain over the entrance all reduce loss. A lobby or vestibule arrangement — two sets of doors forming an airlock — is the most effective solution for large entrances.

Why does my automatic door open when nobody is there?

Usually a misaligned or oversensitive motion sensor picking up movement outside the intended zone — passing traffic, moving foliage, or even rain. Sensor field adjustment resolves it and stops the energy waste.

Can automatic doors be locked after hours?

Yes — electric locks integrated with the operator, controlled by a mode switch or an access control system, allow the door to be secured while still permitting authorised entry and emergency egress.

What happens in a power failure?

Depending on configuration: the door may fail open, may be openable by hand, or may break out under pressure. On escape routes, safe egress must be guaranteed — confirm this behaviour at specification stage, not after installation.
