Both an air curtain and a high speed door tackle the same problem: an opening that has to let people and vehicles through while limiting the exchange of air, temperature, dust and insects. They do it in completely different ways — one blows a barrier of air across the gap, the other physically closes the gap quickly. Understanding the difference stops facilities from buying one where they needed the other, or buying both where one would do.
An air curtain is a unit mounted above (or beside) an opening that blows a controlled stream of air across it, creating an invisible barrier. The doorway stays physically open; the moving air resists the exchange of inside and outside air.
A high speed door physically closes the opening, and does so fast enough that it can cycle for every passage without slowing traffic. When closed, it is a complete seal.
This is the key point: an air curtain reduces exchange across an open doorway, while a high speed door eliminates it when closed. An air curtain is a partial, always-on barrier over a permanently open door. A high speed door is a full barrier that is open only for the seconds someone is passing through.

This is not always an either/or. At a demanding entrance, an air curtain and a high speed door complement each other — the door handles sealing, security and the bulk of temperature control, while the air curtain manages the brief moments the door is open and adds comfort just inside. For the most controlled entrances, the combination outperforms either alone. The right answer depends on traffic, on whether the opening must close, and on what you are trying to keep in or out. Not as the primary barrier. An air curtain reduces exchange but does not seal, so for real temperature control a cold store needs a sealing door — often a high speed or insulated door — with an air curtain at most as a supplement during the brief open moments. Relying on an air curtain alone for a cold store leaks continuously.
It depends on traffic. A high speed door is closed most of the time and only operates per cycle, which usually wins where traffic allows the door to actually be shut. An air curtain runs continuously, so at extremely high constant traffic — where a door could never close — it can be the more effective option. Match it to how the opening is actually used.
Sometimes — at demanding entrances with high traffic and tight environmental control, the two together outperform either alone. At most openings, one or the other is enough.
